GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) _ The chief judge of the Spirit Lake Tribal Court has been removed from office by the tribal council Wednesday after tendering her resignation late last week.
Judge Shirley Cain says she submitted her resignation Friday, making it effective in 30 days as required by contract.
Cain said she received a letter from Chairman Roger Yankton Wednesday directing her to leave the office.
Cain declined to explain her reasons for resigning or why tribal officials ordered her gone earlier because she is waiting for final paperwork and her last check from the tribe.
She said the recent case of a Spirit Lake toddler dying after being removed from a Bismarck foster home and returned to a family member on the reservation was a factor.
